I had fun researching and putting together a WWII scenario for Games Day. With all the talk at the club lately about Mid-War desert, I pulled my DAK and Americans out of storage and chose the Battle of Sidi Bouzid as my theme. In early February '42 Rommel, not liking his purely defensive position in Tunisia, decided to seize the initiative and attack through the eastern passes splitting the allied Free French and American forces in the west sectors. His lightning surprise advance drove the allies back. Over 80 miles to the north, the American HQ, with poor reconaissance and planning, ordered an immediate counter-attack in this sector. CCR attacked over 60 miles of open terrain down the valley, crossing wadis, harrassed by German air, and right into a German trap at Sidi Bouzid where elements of both the 10th and 21st Panzer divisions were pinching in from both the north and south. With some tweaking and play balance, I put almost 4000 points per side into this battle and am very pleased with the game play and the fun the players seemed to have with it. Below is a snapshot about midway through the battle. The Germans were fortunate to have reserves arrive early which tipped the balance in their favor. They didn't need the 2 Tiger platoons set to come in last on the reinforcement schedule.
A view from behind the American forces. Alan has prepared to launch his first infantry assault into the village.

From behind the German position in the village. Matt, as the DAK player, repulsed the American infantry assault and the American armor casualties were mounting rapidly. An American retreat ensued.

I hope to run this again after a couple of minor tweaks. I think it is a great scenario using a modified Flames of War HOLD THE LINE mission. I thank Chris for allowing me to use his table space on Saturday. I had fun.
Happy gaming!
